Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Netherlands Creation That Forged our Modern World
There are numerous contenders for the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers working over 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, that converted logs into boards using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct vessels more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands naval, financial as well as cultural dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First True Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A single part converted the rotary movement into vertical action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the rotary motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead a measured step each cycle.
“Each element was modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to integrate them so they operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward stroke and moving on every return motion. This constituted a remarkably clever application of basic parts.”
