As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Several parts of the city recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents ten times the healthy level established by the global health authority.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15-20x above acceptable standards.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Changes

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed city leadership approached the judicial authority to seek a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".
