But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – really, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense of him since they are non-believers or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

The obvious and clear truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a kind of profound affection centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity rather a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in numbers during minor elections.
